Hand stiffness affects 40 percent of people over 65. Morning tightness, reduced grip strength, and joint tenderness can make everyday tasks feel enormous: opening jars, buttoning shirts, holding a pen. The good news: regular gentle exercise is one of the most evidence-backed ways to improve hand comfort and mobility.
Why movement helps stiff hands
Movement pumps natural fluid through joints, which lubricates cartilage and reduces inflammation. Strengthening the muscles around stiff joints offloads stress from the joint surfaces themselves. Range-of-motion work prevents the progressive tightening that comes from inactivity.
The challenge is that stiffness makes exercise uncomfortable. This is where topical relief becomes practically useful. Not just for comfort, but as a tool that makes therapeutic movement more accessible.
The 7 exercises
Do these daily, ideally after applying a topical balm and waiting 10 to 15 minutes:
- Finger curls: Slowly curl fingers into a fist, hold 5 seconds, release. 10 reps each hand.
- Finger spreads: Place hand flat, slowly spread fingers as wide as possible, hold 5 seconds. 10 reps.
- Thumb circles: Rotate thumb in slow full circles, both directions. 10 reps each direction.
- Wrist rotations: With arm extended, rotate wrist slowly in both directions. 10 reps.
- Pinch strengthening: Pinch a soft ball or folded washcloth. Hold 5 seconds, release. 10 reps.
- Tendon glides: Starting with fingers straight, curl to a hook, then a full fist, then flat. Slow sequence. 5 reps.
- Knuckle bends: Keep fingers straight, bend at the knuckles to 90 degrees, hold 5 seconds. 10 reps.
Apply ZL PRO Balm to both hands 10 to 15 minutes before your exercise session. The menthol cooling and botanical comfort can make these exercises significantly easier and encourage better range of motion.
How often, and how hard
These exercises should be gentle. You should feel mild effort but never sharp pain. Start with one set of each and build to two or three sets over several weeks. The ideal time is after a warm shower when joints are loosened, or mid-morning once stiffness has subsided.
If you have severe joint issues or recent hand surgery, consult your physical therapist or occupational therapist before starting a home exercise program.
